VP Legal - Fully Remote - Work From Anywhere!
As the VP, Legal you will be the most senior person in the Legal Department and a critical part of the Leadership Team. The legal team is currently divided into a Corporate, Commercial & Compliance Team, who perform the role of a traditional in-house team, and the Employment Team whose primary role is to support our colleagues in Sales and Customer Success in delivering our services, by advising on all matters relating to global employment law and regulation.
The optimal spread of your responsibilities would be as follows:
70% Strategy & Governance
20% Management
10% Operational (i.e. legal advice or drafting)
Operational
Your primary “operational” responsibilities would be corporate. You should have extensive experience in private practice and in-house in M&A projects and IPOs, to guide Omnipresent through the next stage of its evolution and to a successful exit. You would take the lead - from a legal perspective - on future funding rounds (Series C and beyond) and any eventual sale or IPO, working very closely with our CFO and two CEOs to identify, assess, select and implement a suitable exit for the business as well as any future acquisition opportunities we may identify to grow the business inorganically.
In addition, you would be the final port of call for the most complex queries and projects coming through the team and would oversee the highest risk activities (for example threatened lawsuits) from an executive perspective. Although unlikely in most cases, you would also be expected to step in to do the day to day work if there was a serious capacity crunch so should be comfortable picking up commercial work or employment work with equal ease. Management & Recruitment

  • As the VP, Legal a core part of your mandate is to build out and lead a high-performance team. Omnipresent is a hyper-growth company and the majority of our work is cross functional so having experience developing a team and mentoring them to deliver exceptional quality while managing an intense workload is really important, as are strong project management skills.
  • You will have around 30 people in your team by the end of 2022, and would directly manage and mentor the Director of Legal Product, the Head of Corporate and the Head of Employment & Litigation, who will in turn manage their teams.
  • Strategy & Governance
  • Strategy is a core aspect of this role and makes up the majority of the work you will be doing. The CEOs will be relying on you to consider the social, economic, political and legal environments globally and how this impacts the employment law landscape and our work and to anticipate and address relevant risks as well as overseeing a team-wide approach to standard operating procedures and best practice. More broadly, you will develop and manage the risk strategy of the group, and recommend operational approaches which create the optimal balance of commercial benefit and legal/financial risk. On a more practical level you will set quarterly and annual objectives, and manage the budget in line with the overall growth strategy of the business.
  • As part of the Leadership Team you will also have a key role in advising the co-CEOs as the business continues its hyper-growth journey, and providing guidance on best practice governance approaches, investor comms and corporate group management.

Requirements

  • Be qualified as an English or US solicitor
  • Have a history of exceptional academic results
  • Have a total of 15+ yrs PQE
  • At least 5 years at a top-tier international law firm
  • At least 5 years in-house
  • Have worked in a global business and be comfortable advising on legal issues from a global perspective
  • Experience working at or advising rapid-growth startups
  • Have gone through the Series B to Exit journey before
  • Proven track record leading high-performance teams
  • Have managed / run a team of at least 10 people (your team will be close to 40 by the end of 2022)
  • Be confident liaising with the C-Suite and investors
  • Be an exceptional communicator both written and verbal
