Position: Seasonal Language and Cross-Culture Coordinator Assistant (LCCA)
Supervisor: Language and Cross-Culture Coordinator (LCC)
CLOSING DATE: December 27, 2019
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of the Language and Cross-Culture Coordinator (LCC), the LCCA is primarily responsible for facilitating language and cross-culture sessions for Peace Corps Trainees and assisting the LCC in the supervision of Language and Cross-Culture Facilitators (LCFs). During Pre-service Training (PST), the LCCA will serve as Language Trainer and Language Trainer Supervisor.
The LCCA may be required to live outside their regular place of residence for the duration of the Training of Trainers (TOT) and PST (up to 12 weeks). The LCCA may be required to work outside of, or in addition to, normally scheduled hours to support PST.
The LCCA will have the following roles and responsibilities:
- Language & Cross Culture Facilitation: 60%
- Supervision: 40%
Language:
- Develop language lesson and session plans (complete with learning objectives)
- Facilitate Language and Cross-Culture sessions for Peace Corps Trainees (PCTs)
- Do need assessments for the language needs of PCTs
- Evaluate Trainees’ progress in line with Peace Corps assessment tools
- Assist in the development and/or coordination of language learning materials for PST
- Assist in training language trainers in adult learning methodologies
- Use adult learning methodologies in all training sessions.
- Facilitate TOT sessions for language trainers
Cross-culture
- Assist in the implementation of Pre-Service Training (PST) cross-culture programs
- Develop lesson and session plans
- Facilitate cross-culture sessions during PST
- Assist in the development and revision of cross-culture learning materials for PST
Supervision 40%
- Explain LCF duties and responsibilities during PST
- Assist in the supervision, evaluation and assessment of LCFs
- Assess LCF needs
- Observe classes of LCFs and give feedback on their teaching, using the coach approach.
- Analyze LCF lesson plans and Log sheets and give feedback
- Use existing tools to evaluate learners’ progress and suggest new tools to that effect
- Identify and communicate Trainee safety and security concerns and issues to the Training Manager, Safety and Security Manager (SSM) and relevant staff.
- Monitor Trainees’ and Volunteers’ compliance with Peace Corps policies, especially related to safety and security.
- Assist in conducting workshops for both new and experienced language instructors before and during PST.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: University Bachelor’s degree in any field.
Prior Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience as a language facilitator, preferably with American or other international non-governmental organizations, and preferably organizations that achieve their mission through volunteerism. Related work experience to include supervision / leadership, implementation of training for groups, training session design and delivery. Minimum of 1 year experience in supervising and/or coordinating language teaching/facilitation staff.
Language Proficiency: Excellent written and oral skills in French and working knowledge of English. In addition to these two languages, mastery of Fulfulde would be an advantage.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:
- Skills as a trainer, facilitator, and mentor in a cross-cultural setting
- Proficiency in use of the internet and with Microsoft programs: Excel, PowerPoint. Word, etc.
- Ability to work successfully within a multi-cultural context.
- Ability to work independently and proactively.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and a strong sense of integrity.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A strong knowledge of Peace Corps and its language teaching model. Highly organized, analytical, and professional.
